In August, the Gartner Group placed Generative AI on the peak of “Inflated Expectations” of the Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies. They also suggest emergent AI will have a profound impact on business and society reaching transformational benefit within two to five years.

In Andy Grove’s book “Only the Paranoid Survive,” he addresses times when massive change occurs and a company must suddenly, adapt or fail. He calls it a Strategic Inflection Point, where ordinary rules of business go out the window. It can be an opportunity to win in the marketplace and emerge stronger than ever.

Generative AI – Impact and Adoption

The McKinsey Group suggests that Generative AI is changing the AI game: “Generative AI is poised to unleash the next wave of productivity. To grasp what lies ahead requires an understanding of the breakthroughs that have enabled the rise of generative AI, which were decades in the making.” Generative AI’s impact on productivity could add trillions of dollars in value to the global economy. McKinsey’s latest research estimates that generative AI could add the equivalent of 2.6 trillion to 4.4 trillion annually across the 63 use cases analyzed.

Generative AI – Applicable Across Multiple Industries

I have also explored the application of Generative AI across various verticals – from Vertical Farming to Virtual Universes.

For example, at t Hum Capital we have been impressed at the performance of Large Language Models relative to rules-based approaches to analyzing financial data. It feels like we are on the cusp of a new paradigm for financial analysis where models can explain how investors think step-by-step back to companies. Companies can then take that feedback and know the yardstick by which their performance will be measured. Imagine a world where every investor has infinite time to share feedback and brainstorm around how to improve a business. How could that feedback change our economy which is currently feedback scarce?
