Why Criticism Lands

What’s something most people don’t understand?

Pretty much all criticism that lands only does so because some inner voice within us, probably implanted in childhood, gets triggered that gives that criticism some form of credibility.

We are typically the harshest judges of ourselves and things that happen to us. Our inner voices can tell us we aren’t strong enough, smart enough, pretty enough, … or worst of all deserving enough.

Sometimes those voices get created by a parent who wanted for us something that they didn’t achieve. The funny thing is that we also have quieter voices that whisper that we are in fact strong enough, smart enough and worthy enough. Why funny? Because often those same voices were implanted by the exact same person that lead us to doubt ourselves. How? Well, their high expectations would not have been communicated had they not somehow believed we were capable enough…

This notion of inner voices that either hold us back or build us up has been present across cultures and belief systems for centuries.
